Went back and tweaked some of the animation for some of the scenes. After rendering we noticed that the rat’s feet would pass through the clipping plane for the ground.
Update
May 24th, 2010 by JessieSo this week we worked on addressing faculty comments as well as continuing to render.
It’s a little too late to go back and retexture things to be more vibrant (bright colors), so I increased the saturation on all the renders to make things pop more. That said, it’s probably best we didn’t go overboard because the last thing the girls need is an induced phototonic seizure.
I fixed the rats foot which was penetrating the ground.
I’ve rerendered some rouge locket passes. I’ve been rendering out Ambient Occlusion for all shots with the girl (this makes the lighting a lot nicer, esp with a shadow inside her mouth/helmet).
I’m not going to post any video of the new renders because it’s going to take more time than it’s worth. We plan on having the animation totally done by Friday so I can spend Memorial Weekend with my family.
Important Our brochure image is rendering. It will be on Project Path tomorrow.

May 23rd, 2010 by kevinThis week I took the critiques that we got from the faculty and made some design changes to the website. First I changed the text on the Upload Page to be more specific to each individual child. Next I fixed the legibility issues with the buttons. After that I went through and made some changes in the color scheme to make it seem less compressed. The final critique I wanted to address said “What video is uploaded? Back after upload(?).” I figure this is reference to our walk through in our presentation in which we didn’t actually upload any video so the faculty didn’t get a chance to see what happens and therefor got confused as to what you would do after you hit upload. In our Senior Show presentation we will actually be uploading a video and we will show that the user gets visual clues i.e. a loading bar and text prompt as to when the upload is complete and then the user can go right into uploading another video. Animating (wk8)
May 23rd, 2010 by katieSince the animation is pretty much done, this week I mostly did some tweaking. I added some more facial movement to the first inside ship scene with the girl, making her a bit more expressive. I also cleaned up the scene just after the rat sneezes when she asks “Hello?”

May 23rd, 2010 by brettThis week I worked on finalizing shipland, finishing the background music, and general project refinement.
Here is a cut with all the audio added in based on faculty’s, my team’s, and my own opininos. I:
- Added some sound effects
- Created the sad “end” music
- Created the music where she jumps out of the ship (which used to be the accordion music that plays at the end)
- Adjusted levels
- Other minor things I’m probably forgetting
This is the fixed version of shipland which was a mess before.
- Tracked the fire in
- Added a spline deformer to make the fire look more physically accurate when it whips around
Next week I’ll be helping with whatever will need to be done to wrap this project up.

This week we are trying our best to wrap up. Jessie has been in contact with the animators trying to render things that are done. Jessie and Brett have tag teamed on the website, and Kevin is wrapping up the app.
It’s gonna be a rush for Tuesday (stupid rendering), but hopefully we will be able to get everything together for the presentation.

May 9th, 2010 by jacobThis week I continued animating the scenes with the rat.
Despite the general distaste for vimeo, I used it to host the videos this week. Also I have the links to either watch the embedded quicktimes or right click the link and download the file for the mov through “save as” or “save link as”
Some of the shots may not have the nose or ears animated yet. Also some group suggestions still need to be implemented for these shots. I was more concerned with getting them flushed out rather than perfecting them.
-
Shot 04
I animated the rat coming from behind the rock, sneezing, hiding behind the rock and climbing up to greet the space girl with a hello. I also have to add some more emotion to the rat’s face when he says hello.
-
Shot 05 (Musical)
Part 2 of the Musical is not complete yet.
Download Musical Part1 mov link
Download Musical Part3 mov link

Shot 06
I finished the rest of this shot from last week, animating the beginning up to the part where he is holding the locket. There is no audio in this version.

Next week I will finish the second part of the Musical scene and tweak any animation in shots that still need it. I will also prepare for the presentation to the faculty for next week.

May 9th, 2010 by kevinThis week I was able to get everything working except for the progress bar. I got the video player working with next and previous buttons. The code is also set up dynamically so no matter how many videos are in the folder, the user will be able to click all the way through and get an alert if they try to go past the first or last video. I also made a little spinning animation for the upload screen. I got the animation working so that it spins initially and stops when the update is complete. Finally, I added some of the new graphics into the app. This week I plan on fixing up all the graphics and implementing the new buttons and alert messages. I also want to get the progress bar working, hopefully with some help from Jervo on Thursday. Other then that I will just spend this week preparing for our presentation. Bellow is the link to the zip file.

Rendering
May 9th, 2010 by JessieUgh. Rendering
We have been tight on licenses (I’ve only had between 2 and 3 Renderman for Maya licenses all week), so that on top of generally rendering phenomenon like magically scaling objects, missing shadows, black glass…. ugh.
Inside Ship: http://vimeo.com/11617340
Shipfly (mistake in first few frames): shipfly_01
Rat Sneeze: sneeze_01
Turn: follow_turn_01
Hitchcock Zoom (girl not rendered): zoom_01
Climb Rock (no rat): climb_01
Lets Go (needs fix for chest deform, mistake black floating shape, and does not reflect improved camera move): letsgo_01
I also worked on the website. I made a little ‘fake’ login screen, it does not use a database at the moment and accepts anything. No signup page at the moment. Brett integrated the uploader I made last week. I made a contact for which sends me and email formatted like this:

And I made the Previous Uploads page read in the videolog.txt. THAT was a challenge. I had to find a way to break the lines apart, then split those arrays based on a delimiter. It was a lot of fun, way harder than the FTP because there wasn’t a lot of examples online.

I met with Jervo on Saturday and provided him with some graphics:
This needs a little more work (character posting and some adjustments to the font design).

Animating (wk 6)
May 9th, 2010 by katieI had hoped to be done with the girl’s animation by the end of this week but it just wasn’t possible. Although I wasn’t able to complete everything that I had done, I made sure to send out all of my latest playblasts to my group members and to incorporate their comments. Most of the scenes are close to being done if they aren’t already. I didn’t get a chance to fix up anything in the musical scene but mostly that part just needs a little bit of cleaning and additional “dongle” movements.
There has been a lot of back and forth all week with group critiques of the animations. Jessie has also showed some of the final renders to some of the grad students for extra feedback.

Scene 1 (Inside Ship) -
I fixed up the animation for when the girl is pushing buttons before a video message is received on her monitor. I also added more movement in the face, especially the eyes, and added dongle movements. This part of the scene is now complete and ready for rendering.
Download Inside Ship Part 1 link (Click to download .avi)
I added dongle and hand movements to the shot after the girl takes off her locket to look at it. This scene still needs a bit more polishing. I plan on adding some more expression to the eyes and making the hand and dongle movements a bit less floaty.
Download Inside Ship Part 4 link (Click to download .avi)
Scene 3 (Ship land) -
I smoothed out the animation and timing and got the team’s approval for it to move on to the rendering stage. Addressing Ted’s comment from our last meeting, I added a breath before the jump out of the ship.

Scene 6 (End) -
This scene always gives me the most trouble because it almost always crashes when I try to playblast so a lot of time ends up getting spent re-opening Maya.
However, I’m almost done with this scene. The first part when the girl tosses her locket on the ground needs some more adjustments but I feel it’s getting pretty close. I added some movement to her expression as the camera zooms in on her face. I wanted this movement to be just enough to keep her from looking dead in this shot but not so much that it detracts from the camera move.
For the part after the rat picks up the locket and calls out to the girl, I fixed the girl’s pose as she’s turning around so that her body is twisting in a more natural manner. I originally had her turn around quickly and excitedly after the rat says “Wait!” but the general feedback from the team was that she should turn around slower and sadder and then become happier after the rat says “I can help!” so I made that change. I added more movement to the dongles on her helmet and smoothed out the animation overall. This shot of the scene is now completed as far as my part goes. Brett is working on the locket animation.

Next week I will finish up the animation and then move on to helping to putting assets together for the group presentation.
